อาลัยโรเจอร์ อีเบิร์ต นักวิจารณ์ภาพยนตร์ผู้เป็นตำนาน เสียชีวิตด้วยวัย 70

เพิ่งอ่านข่าวว่าโรเจอร์ อีเบิร์ต จะลาพักงานเมื่อสองวันก่อนครับ เพราะว่าโรคมะเร็งต่อมไทรอยด์ที่เคยเป็นเมื่อปี 2002 ได้กลับมากำเริบใหม่ ใจก็ภาวนาว่าขอให้แกหายไวๆ แต่แล้วก็มีข่าวร้ายเมื่อคืนว่านักวิจารณ์ภาพยนตร์ และนักเขียนผู้เป็นตำนานท่านี้ได้เสียชีวิตลงด้วยวัย 70 ครับ

การประกาศการเสียชีวิตมาจาก The Chicago Sun-Times หนังสือพิมพ์ที่อีเบิร์ตทำงานให้มาตลอด 40 ปี ไม่มีการรายงานชัดเจนถึงสาเหตุของการตาย แต่จากที่อีเบิร์ตเขียนบล็อคไว้เมื่อสองวันก่อนก็น่าจะพอเดาได้ว่าน่าจะเกี่ยวข้องกับอาการป่วยที่เป็นอยู่

โรเจอร์ อีเบิร์ต น่าจะถือได้ว่าเป็นนักวิจารณ์ภาพยนตร์ที่ทรงอิทธิพลและดังที่สุดในโลกก็ว่าได้ ผมเพิ่งได้ติดตามอ่านของวิจารณ์ของอีเบิร์ตมาในระยะ 10 ปีนี้เอง แต่ก็รู้จักชื่อของอีเบิร์ตมานานกว่า 20 ปี โดยเฉพาะจากวลี two thumbs up ที่แกให้แก่หนังที่แกชอบมากๆ และการให้ thumb up หรือ thumb down ของแกก็มีผลต่อการตัดสินใจของคนดูหนังมาตลอดพอสมควร

อย่างหนึ่งที่ผมพบในงานเขียนวิจารณ์ของอีเบิร์ต ซึ่งเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้มาตลอดก็คือ อีเบิร์ตไม่เพียงแนะนำนักดูหนังว่าควรดูอะไรในหนังเรื่องนั้นๆ แต่ยังแนะนำด้วยว่าควรคิดยังไงกับสิ่งที่เราดู โดยมีมีการใช้ภาษาที่คนทั่วไปเข้าใจง่าย อ่านสนุก

อีเบิร์ตเริ่มทำงานในฐานะนักวิจารณ์หนังตั้งแต่ปี 1967 และได้กลายเป็นนักวิจารณ์ภาพยนตร์คนแรกที่ได้รางวัลพูลิทเซอร์จากงานวิจารณ์ในปี 1975 จากนั้นก็กลายเป็นนักวิจารณ์หนังทางรายการทีวีตั้งแต่ปี 1986-2006 จัดร่วมกับจีน ซิสเกลก่อน แล้วมาจัดกับริชาร์ด โรเปอร์ ต่อหลังจากซิสเกลเสียชีวิต อีเบิร์ตหายไปจากหน้าจอทีวีในปี 2006 เพื่อทำการผ่าตัดรักษาโรคมะเร็งที่เป็นอยู่และกลายเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้ผู้คนในแง่การต่อสู้ชีวิต เพราะต้องตัดขากรรไกรล่างออก ทำให้พูดไม่ได้ กินและดื่มตามปกติไม่ได้ แต่ก็ไม่อาจทำให้อีเบิร์ตเลิกเขียนงาน ยังคงเขียนบทความและบทวิจารณ์ออกมาเรื่อยๆ งานเขียนสุดท้ายของอีเบิร์ตที่ผมได้อ่านก็คงเป็น 10 อันดับหนังปี 2012 ที่อีเบิร์ตยกให้ Argo เป็นหนังอันดับ 1 ประจำปี

นอกจากเขียนบทวิจารณ์แล้ว อีเบิร์ตยังชอบเล่นทวิตเตอร์ เขียนและแนะนำสัพเพเหระทั้งที่เกี่ยวกับหนังและไม่เกี่ยวกับหนังครั้ง อีเบิร์ตเคยพูดในช่วงแรกว่าจะไม่ยอมติดทวิตเตอร์ แต่ท้ายที่สุดก็ติดหนึบ กระทั่งเมื่อ 2 เมษายนที่ผ่านมาที่ได้ทวีตข้อความสุดท้ายบอกเรื่องอาการป่วย

อีเบิร์ตยังเป็นนักวิจารณ์คนเดียวที่ได้มีชื่อบน Hallywood Walk of Fame ด้วยครับ ในปี 2005 ไม่ว่าบทวิจารณ์ของเขาจะโดนใจทุกคนหรือไม่ แต่เขาก็เป็นที่รักของทุกคนในวงการ คนฮอลลีวู้ดมากมายต่างทวีตข้อความแสดงความอาลัยหลังจากเขาเสียชีวิต
